Chronic absenteeism among Black students has surged, with increases reported in the double digits\u2014around 13 percentage points or more in recent years\u2014exposing deep fractures in school climate, mental health support, and systemic inequality.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s be clear: when students aren\u2019t in school, nothing else works. Not reform. Not funding. Not policy promises. Attendance is the foundation\u2014and for Black students, that foundation is cracking.<\/p>\n

A<\/strong> Crisis Accelerated, Not Created<\/strong><\/p>\n Chronic absenteeism\u2014defined as missing 10% or more of the school year\u2014spiked nationwide during the COVID-19 pandemic and hasn\u2019t fully recovered. At its peak, nearly one-third of all U.S. students were chronically absent.<\/p>\n But averages hide the truth. Black students have been hit harder and longer. Poverty remains one of the strongest predictors of absenteeism, and Black students are disproportionately affected. Children in low-income communities are two to three times more likely to be chronically absent, often because their schools and neighborhoods lack the resources to mitigate disruptions.<\/p>\n And yet, policy responses often focus on attendance tracking instead of addressing root causes.
